The Power of Antioxidants part I

Probably you read all over the web about products (especially weight loss products), that are claimed to be very beneficial to your body because of the antioxidants they contain.

Well, antioxidants are extremely beneficial to your body, but if you don’t know what exactly antioxidants are and how they work, you won’t be able to value their importance to your body.

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are chemicals substances that can slow or halt oxidation processes in your body. Oxidation processes can cause chemical damages to body cells’ components, that’s why all body cells contain complex antioxidant systems for preventing those oxidative damages.

How antioxidants work?

Researches have shown a connection between oxidative damage and the occurrence of some diseases. An example for such connection is the LDL oxidation and the cardiovascular disease. The processes leading to cardiovascular disease are complex and involve LDL oxidation by free radicals, which results in inflammation.

To reduce the potential damages from free radicals oxidation, it is recommended to increase the consumption of foods high in antioxidants. That brings us to the next question: “Which are the best sources of antioxidants?”
